Interactive Word Study: Make a Big Word
The Digital Reader has Interactive Word Study activities on select titles, as indicated by the Interactive Word Study icon. This article covers how to play the Make a Big Word activity.
To start, your child will select a book with the Word Study icon. Make a Big Word is currently featured in select books in the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth/Sixth Grade sets and the Intervention Partner set as well.
When the book opens, click on the left rail to expand the options. Click on Make a Big Word on the left rail next to the icon, then the opening animation will appear. The animation is a quick preview of how the game is played. When your child is ready to play, click the Begin button.
From there, the audio will prompt your child to make the word. To do so, your child will need to drag the letter tiles from the orange box to the boxes below. Alternatively, they can double click the letter tiles to send them down.
After your child makes the word, the word will be broken into parts, and the parts will be said followed by the word. This will then repeat from the beginning. If your child misspells the word, the correct spelling will be displayed before moving forward.
Next, your child will be asked to break the word into parts. They will need to use the slider bar to select where they'd like to break the word. If they do not choose correctly, they'll be asked to try again two times before the correct break is shown and said.
Once they've completed that, they've completed the activity!
